Accommodation in Underberg and the Southern Drakensberg
An eight-bedroom house in an established garden at Underberg, looking west to the escarpment. Large enough for a reunion, a wedding party or a walking group that would otherwise be split across two guesthouses.
The area
Underberg is the gateway town to the Southern Drakensberg — a hundred-odd kilometres of escarpment that most of the country drives past on its way to the more photographed northern peaks. It is quieter, greener and considerably less booked out.
The Southern Berg has well over a hundred self-catering places and B&Bs, and almost all of them sleep between four and eight. That is the constraint most groups run into: a family reunion or a hiking party of fourteen ends up split across two properties, in two kitchens, on two invoices, with everybody driving between them.
Our house at Underberg has eight bedrooms. It is a house for the whole party rather than half of it, set in a mature garden with a lawn that runs west to the valley and the escarpment beyond.

Common questions
Underberg, answered.
- Is there accommodation in Underberg for large groups?
- Yes. Most self-catering houses in the Southern Drakensberg sleep four to eight, which splits larger parties across two properties. Our Underberg house has eight bedrooms, so a reunion, wedding party or walking group can stay under one roof with one kitchen and one booking.
- How far is Underberg from Sani Pass?
- About an hour by road. The pass itself requires a 4x4 above the South African border post, and most visitors book a guided trip rather than driving it themselves.
- How far is Underberg from Durban?
- Roughly three hours via the N3 and the R617, tarred the whole way. Pietermaritzburg is about two hours, and Johannesburg around seven.
- When is the best time to visit the Southern Drakensberg?
- Summer, from November to March, is green and warm with dramatic afternoon storms. Winter is cold, dry and clear, with snow on the escarpment and the best long-distance views. Easter is busiest because of Splashy Fen.
- How do I book the Underberg house?
- The house is being prepared for the collection. Send us your dates through the enquiry form or WhatsApp 074 574 7812 and we will tell you honestly when it will be available.
