The Berg House

The Berg House sits in a mature garden at Underberg, an hour below the Sani Pass and about three from Durban. The lawn runs west to a bank of established beds, and beyond them the ground falls away to the valley — and on a clear day, to snow on the Drakensberg escarpment.

Eight bedrooms is an unusual number for this market. It is the difference between a couple booking a weekend and three families booking a week, and it is why the house works for a reunion, a wedding party or a walking group that would otherwise be split across two guesthouses.

There is a long table on the grass. On a clear evening the escarpment turns the colour of the light and everybody ends up out there, which is rather the point of the place.

In winter the whole thing moves indoors. There is a wood-burning fireplace in the lounge, and the Southern Berg gets properly cold — snow on the escarpment, frost on the lawn, and a reason to stay in with the fire lit rather than drive anywhere.

Inside, the main bathroom has been done properly: twin basins on a timber vanity, a double walk-in shower with two heads and a pebbled floor, and windows on two sides.
